AIPWA LEADERS SAY ‘BRINDA’S STATEMENT AT DUM DUM SHAMEFUL’
DEMAND IMMEDIATE JUSTICE FOR RAPE VICTIMS IN NANDIGRAM

New Delhi. 17 Nov. ’07

AIPWA General Secretary Kumudini Pati and President Srilata Swaminathan, in a statement to the Press, said CPI(M) PB Member and Ex-G.S. of AIDWA Brinda Karat has acted in the most callous and irresponsible way by making a shameful public appeal to her ‘comrades’ to administer the ‘Dum Dum dawai’ to those fighting against corporate land grab in Nandigram. They said her inciting cadres to perpetrate violence on innocent people reminds us of the likes of Uma Bharati inciting Sangh Pariwar activists to demolish the Babari Masjid.
AIPWA has demanded that the cases of molestation, rape and abduction of women and girls-- now in hundreds---must be seriously investigated by the CBI and their medical examinations made and statements recorded including that of gang rape victim Sabina Begum of Sadengabari and 2 teenage girls of Maheshpur. They said that the case of Sabita Patra, a pregnant woman who was burnt alive and the abduction of 2 minor daughters of Sabina too must be investigated, since the police were not helping to do so. They demanded 10 lakh compensation for rape victims and 5 lakhs to those molested as well as arrest of the perpetrators on the basis of victims’ statement. They said that the National Commission for Women should also intervene immediately in the matter and send a team to Nandigram.

Kumudini Pati,
General Secretary,
All India Progressive Women’s Association
